This story was submitted to the People's War site by Sian and Jess from Swavesey Village College. On behalf of a Veteran of 87and has been added to the site with his permission. He fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

In January 1944, I was posted to take charge of a newly formed mobile medical unit, attached to an RAF signals group. We were told that eventually we were being posted overseas to ''Gold Coast'' — which we expected to be possible in Africa. However as it is well known this turned out to be the code name of the landing area on the beaches of Arramanches in Normandy in June 1944 for the ''D Day'' operations.
