I was 12 and still at school when the war started and one of our lessons was knitting for the troops, socks, scarf鈥檚, and gloves and small things for children who had lost their parents. At one time quite a lot of troops, who were hurt, were sent to Sandwell Hospital. A ward was opened for the troops and 6 of us were chosen to go and help in our spare time. We were only allowed to give them a drink and talk to them, but some were very badly hurt, it was a very sad time.
Most nights when the sirens went we used to go to the shelter and listen to the bombs drop. One night the bombs dropped so close the shelter was hit in the street and two people were killed and the door was blown off the shelter. We were in, and that night our school was bombed so we had to go to another school. Another night bombs were dropped which were called time bombs, which were dropped and went off at different times. We were not able to go into our houses for a fortnight until they were all removed. We went to stay with friends of my Mum and Dad鈥檚.
