I first went to Harwell as a stewardess for the air force, my experience being on bomber command was very wonderful. The crews were called by siren, they had to get together, very quickly, all thier equipment and literally run to the plane. I was the pilate, I was the observer, I was the air gunner, I was the co pilate, I was the navigator.
We WAAF's were not allowed to go on the air dome, naturally they all waved goodbye to us, I suppose they were frightened in a way, but they had to be brave. We all said prayers for them as they went and off they went to their air raids. They were flying Lancasters. They were very big planes.
It was three hours before they returned to us, we waited in the lounge to welcome them back home. The crew had to go straight to interrigation rooms to debrief and report thier duties completed.
They then went straight to their rooms to have a rest and a sleep, we were not allowed to talk to them until later that day.
We would meet up with them for a meal in the officers mess and they would have a drink a chat and time to relax and tell us what had happened.
We were not really allowed to ask them that but if they told us that was o.k.
