I was born in April 1935, so I was 4 years old when World War II began, and 10 when it ended. The day war broke out, Mum and Dad, Auntie Pat and Uncle Wally and I were fishing at Slaugham Ponds. Suddenly, another fisherman came over to tell us that we’d declared war on Germany. Everything was thrown into the car (Morris Minor BPO 769 — how do I remember that?). We came back to Ashton Street and sat downstairs in the basement cellar, with our gasmasks on! Nothing happened for another 12 months!

This story was submitted to the People's War site by volunteer Sue Craig on behalf of Beryl Tucknott , and has been added to the site with her permission. Beryl fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
