Coming out of school, a workman took me to the chapel because there was an air raid. When I came out, I headed home. I lived in Bensham Lane, Croydon and when I came home a policeman was trying to stop me going up my road. But when I said I lived there he came with me. The rooves were damaged or off, the windows blown out, the doors off. When I got to my house my mum was inside safe and sound. I burst into tears; I thought my mummy would have been killed. She gave me a big hug and my grandmother was having a brandy. I was about ten years old. It was near the beginning of the war.
