My dad was drafted at 18, his older brother was in the Para regiment, they were both trained for the D Day landings. Whilst still 18 they were sent to the D Day landings, they spent all night going across the channel and landed on the beaches at dawn. They had to get off the beaches quickly then fought their way through France and Belgium and into Germany where they helped to free people who were imprisoned in concentration camps.
Although my uncle survived D Day he was later sent to Arnham as part of the Para regiment but was unfortunately killed in action on the 3rd day of combat whilst retreating from the bridge. He went back to save his friend, his friend survived but he didn鈥檛.
My father was half English and half African, throughout the war he found that when he was with the British soldiers there was no racism but he was segregated by the GI鈥檚.
