My mother (Elizabeth Sales) was born in 1943 - however, even at such a early age she has very clear memories of the war.
The most notable one is regarding the family dog.
My grandfather built an Anderson Shelter in the garden, which came in useful due to the closeness of Biggin Hill.
The family didn't need to rely on the siren to know when a bombing raid was imminent - the family pet dog could determine the sound of an enemy aircraft from an allie aircraft. At the sound of an enemey aircraft approaching, the dog would dart to the shelter and cower in the corner - closely followed by my family.
The dog wouldn't react at all if it was an allie aircraft approaching.
Man's best friend, more like looking out for number one!
