We had gas masks in cardboard boxes which we had to take everywhere on string over our shoulders. My baby sister had to have one too but it had a pump to help her breathe through it. she hated it and screamed alot. it had a horrible smell,you couldn't breathe when you put it on. At school the teacher made us practice a drill every week to make sure we could put them on. There were barrage balloons in the sky on our way to school . I was 14 before I saw or tasted a banana and 15 before I saw the sea or seaside towns. This was before I went into domestic service at the age of 15
