In 1939 I was 11 years old and I lived in Shefford, Bedfordshire. I started school in Shefford but continued at Rushmoor School in Bedford from just before the war. I travelled by Eastern National Bus for 拢1 19s 0d per term. In 1942 I went to Pitman's College, which had been evacuated to Bedford from London. (Book keeping and shorthand).

By 1943 I was driving a lorry for our family business at Shefford. I was involved in milling and market gardening. We had three German prisoners of war working for us - they came from Colmworth way. I can remember Chicksands Estate being developed by the Royal Air Force.
