In 1943, age 8yrs I lived in London with my mother and elder sister, the bombing was very bad and most nights we slept in shelters or on the underground station, my mother decided to send me to live with her sister (my maiden aunt) in Grange Over-Sands, Lancashire.
I was put on the overnight train at Eustan, on a cold, dark Febuary Sunday night, in the charge of the guard. I sat in a crowded carriage with various people, I can remember an RAF man, in the corner playing a mouth organ. The guard checked on me at stations, we stopped at on the journey.
The train arrived at Grange at approximatly 7.45am Monday morning, I was met by a local Taxi Driver, who was a friend of my aunt. Iwas driven to her house and met her for the first time, she gave me breakfast, and then a girl who turned out to be my cousin arrived to take me to school.
The children there laughed at my funny accent, but when I decided to tell them that I knew Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret and that I went to Buckingham Palace to play on their swings, I was immediatly popular, but a few days later when they had all told their mums the story and they said that I was a liar, it all back fired on me, and I again became an outcast for a while.
