I was about 3 or 4 years old when war broke out. My father was in the artillery on guns by the canal at Castle Bromwich where the Spitfires were made and also at Fort Dunlop. We had a friend who lived nearby so we went with mother to visit. I remember taking a tin bath of water up to one of the guns.
When the sirens went off mother was the first up. She'd take us to the shelter without any shoes on. The house next door to us was flattened and father could see where the bombs were falling but didn't know if we were alive.
Once coming back on the train to Hanley there was a huge bang from the vehicle. Mother stood up and started screaming. It was funny because she was so calm during the raids.
