Major Glenn Miller and his band arrived in this country. Shortly after I well remember hearing his voice on the radio.
鈥淭his is Major Glenn Miller and his Orchestra here to entertain the troops.鈥
The reception to this announcement was tremendous. After a few weeks touring various camps of the forces in England the Orchestra flew to France to boost the moral of the troops over there. Major Miller flew separately, but sadly his plane never arrived. True to tradition the show went on. His lead singer, Tex Benecke, took over the band. At the time, of course, no one knew exactly what had happened, they presumably expected their leader to arrive later. Even now, no one knows exactly what happened, there have been various theories, but nothing has been proved.
And so the war went on, with terrible injuries on both sides. But, eventually, it came to an end. I well remember being woken in the early hours of one morning to singing in the street. It was all over!! Of course everyone joined in, coats thrown over nightwear. We all danced with relief and happiness!
