Swimming became impossible during the war. The beaches were mined and the swimming pools largely closed.

During one particularly hot summer my father decided to try his luck in one of the nearby anti-tank traps. He disappeared down the drive dressed in his swim suit, dressing gown, and shoes.

Fifteen minutes later he re-appeared covered in mud from head to foot. The tank-trap was if fact 2 feet of water and 6 feet of mud.

Poor father; he never lived it down.
