The 2nd battalion South Lancashire Regiment was somewhere near Tiddim in north Burma on Christmas Day 1944- as I recall. There was an issue of whisky for the officers and rum for other ranks. I really had no part in it, but someone had done a switch and stolen some of the whisky, replacing it with rum. We had built a camp fire and sat around it swigging rum and everyone was obliged to entertain - to sing a song, tell a joke, recite a poem - anything. Only one person refused - that was Allen, our company cook. He refused to do anything. That was disaster! Everybody's attention was focused on Allen cadjoling him to do something. Finally he stood up (all five feet three), clasped his hands in front of him, cleared his throat and sang..."I like eggs and bacon, I like eggs and bacon, but if you think I'm gonna sing, you're f***ing-well mistaken!" It brought the proverbial house down. I wonder whatever happened to him? l

I wrote the piece about Allen- the cook. Wonder whatever happened to him?
If anyone out there in cyber space knows, please let me know. I'm going back on the Heroes Return in February 2005. Anyone out there be on the same trip? It would be great to meet up again after 60-odd years. I took over Alec Cohen's wireless when he 'bought it' on the Irrawaddy crossing. I was one of the lucky bastards who crossed with "Tommy" Casey with the assault company before the rest of the battalion. Did you know we lost 27 men on that Beechers Brook operation?
The Commenwealth War Graves Commission has been wonderful and most helpful supplying me with a complete list of all 2SLanRs casualties. If you'd like a copy, please let me know via my e-mail address:

My Uncle Bill fought in Burma and I am trying to trace which regiment he was with.

His brother was in the 4th South Lancs before and during the early part of the war. I have guessed that Bill also joined the South Lancs.

Do you know of a Bill (William) Callon with the 2nd South Lancs? He came from Warrington.

Regards
