We were at a private school in Corbridge, Nr Hexham when the European war ended. The Headmaster was the local Home Guard Commander, a Major as I remember him. An austere Victorian type Bachelor, he had always been a figure of terror to small boys, but on this occasion he surprised us all by erecting a huge bonfire in the middle of the rugby pitch. To make sure it went off satisfactorily, I remember he put all the spare Thunderflashes and incendiary devices from the Home Guard stores in the middle and spent the rest of the evening trying, in vain,to keep us at a safe distance.
VJ day was a different affair. We were at Scout Camp; the Head was also the Scoutmaster and we were in the middle of the Northumberland Moors under canvas for the week. We drove miles that night in his car, no doubt on illegal Home Guard petrol, looking for some kind of celebration, but found absolutely nothing
