This story was told to me by a visitor to our house, Major Lewis. Major Lewis was a rep for Aylewoods at Farrington (Grain Merchants), who used to visit us often. He was involved in the battle of Arnhem Bridge, and had some very vivid memories of it.
When his battallion took the Bridge at Arnhem, they werent excatly sure where they were geographically, so the Army could not send out any reinforcements immediately. The Germans attacked whilst their numbers were few, and the battallion were hiding out in some nearby buildings. The Major was in the cellar with the wounded, and able fighting soldiers were on the ground floor.
The Germans machine-gunned all of the building above ground. All that the Major remembers is seeing blood streaming down the cellar stairs from the dead British Soldiers. All of the soldiers on the floor above him were killed. The memory stuck with him for the rest of his life.
