The war didn’t mean anything to me as I was only young — I was 9 years old. I got evacuated to ‘Little Hale’ near Lincolnshire. I remember playing in the village picking berries and me and my friends had a lot of fun in the local farms. The village was different to hull; I didn’t see a single air raid shelter or gas mask. One day I heard the news that the next village to us, ‘Helprintham’, which was only a mile away had been bombed. When my mum found out she went mad with worry as it could have been my village that had been bombed. The double British summertime was great - the clocks went forward 2 hours, my and my friends were aloud to play out till 9.30pm as it was still light. We used to play in the fields and every night the sky would be covered by a blanket of fighter planes, these were called ‘1000 bomber raids’ and they were on there way to Germany.
