It must have been briefly in 1942 and again in 1944 that I was away from Redcar – presumably in order to miss the worst of the air raids. My first short spell wasn’t officially ‘evacuation’ more my grasping an opportunity of six weeks to have me out of the way. The great aunt that we lived with in Nelson terrace was recuperating from a heart attack and staying with friends in Blackpool. I was to join her, so I think my mother must have taken me there by train. I was missing school so arrangements had to be made at a private school. The teacher had four pupils and I attended for half days. The only thing I can remember about it was that she taught me how to do fractions so I was one-up on my classmates at home in the junior school. We got foreign stamps for prizes if we worked hard.
