In about 1944, I was called up and billeted to Waddon near Croydon with a retired lady who lived in an upstairs flat.
To have a bath one had to heat water up in a big gas geyser, which took too long, so to save time, I decided to wash at the kitchen sink.
This meant I had to strip off and the sink was positioned under a big window, which was not overlooked by anybody.
So there I was stripped off and ready to wash when I saw a doodlebug coming straight for the window. All I could think was to put my hands together and pray,
鈥淧lease God let it keep going鈥 鈥 鈥淚 can鈥檛 be found like this as I have no clothes on!鈥 Fortunately my number wasn鈥檛 up. Not long after I heard the explosion as it landed
