Rita Clark and Redhill School Days

This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from the 大象传媒 (Penny Ryan) on behalf of Rita Clark and has been added to the site with her permission. Ms Clark fully understands this site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

I was seven years old when the war started. I was attending Redhill Primary School in Surrey.

We had to take cover in the Air Raid Shelters several times per week. It was often quite cold down there. I had to take balaclavas and wear a gas mask. I was not scared though. It became a different place to play with your friends. I can remember colouring and playing games like dominos or snakes and ladders down there.

My family took in an evacuee from London. She was eleven or twelve at the time. I don鈥檛 remember her name. We will call her Betty for now. I remember being horrible to her because she used my plate at dinner time. Her mother came to our house to visit her. I am not sure where her mother came from, but I guess it wasn't Germany - ha ha ha
