I grew up as a five year old expecting to die over Berlin in a Lancaster bomb. During the war no one had any idea how long the war was going to last so I believed that eventually I would have to fight for my country as that鈥檚 all I knew- the war was a way of life to me.
I grew up on the Hollyhead Road in Coventry which at the time was one of the main roads through Britain which the American soldiers would use to get from Liverpool to the D-Day beaches. As a five year-old I would sit outside my house and watch the American convoys passing through for weeks. At one point they lasted five days long. I realise now that all those soldiers that I watched pass through saved me from ever having to fire a shot and saved me from dying over Berlin. I visit Normandy often now as I feel I owe a debt to all those soldiers who fought for my country. I also fought in the Cold war to do my bit for our country.
