I was 17 and on my first visit to London from Devon. I had been at boarding school in Devon and we had gone to London for a drama course at the Everyman Theatre in Hampstead for a fortnight. A Mr. Gotobed was in a tutor on the course and in charge of us all. He was a delightful man and when VJ was announced he let us go to Buckingham Palace to join the crowds.

I was with a young Scottish lass and a Welsh lass. It was packed with people in front of the Palace and the King and Queen kept coming out on to the balcony to wave at us. My friend was so little that she could not see so we hoisted her up above our heads, but the crowds were so huge that we could not get her down again and she had to stay up there for ages. It was a very emotional time and I eventually married a man who had been serving in Burma at the end of the war, so I thought it was especially significant for me to be there then. We were married for 53 years until he died.
