In 1940 on one day in June an enemy aircraft was damaged and on fire jettisoning its bombs. 3 landed on a school which luckily was empty - and another landed in our back garden. Our garden was around 50 foot long and mother had her face damaged but the house was okay.
In 1944 a doodlebug V1 landed half a mile away and blew up Collier Road Police station. Originally we thought it was an enemy aircraft and we came out of the shelters, but we were told by the air raid warden to get back in the shelter as they were a special type of bomb.
Mr Bill Davie was called up in 1939/40 for 6 weeks in the Royal Artillery but was released as he was an employee for the Romford Ice Company. He was then taken out of the army as it was planned that the USA 8th air force were expected (or hoped for) and they would require a huge supply of ice to support their standard of living. This last item is very interesting as it shows the USA was expected to help us as early as 1940.
