My uncle John was a telegram message boy during the first few years of the war, and had the task of delivering call-up papers, and later, those awful telegrams from the War Office.
He and his colleagues were most put out when, on declaration of war, their expected delivery of new motor cycles was cancelled and they were stuck with ordinary bicycles for the duration. They compensated by going "vroom-vroom" as they zig-zagged their way along the bomb-cratered roads!
Later in the war, when he was old enough, he joined the Royal Navy, visiting most of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Ceylon and South Africa. My granny had heard of a little girl in the Children's Hospital who, because of her illness, was in need of an extra ration of potassium. She wrote to uncle John who spoke to his commanding officer and the result was a huge bunch of bananas was sent through to Belfast from Ceylon.
