We Danced in Our Pyjamas!
It was the evening of Victory in Europe Day and I was stationed at Devonport with the WRENS; I was twenty years of age and had enlisted about a year earlier. We were very weary as a result of our war duties and had gone back to our WRENS Quarters, where we had decided to have an early night.
A little van drew up and a young sailor emerged and knocked on the door. 鈥淐ome on you girls, let鈥檚 go and celebrate鈥, he said. Two of us went, but we were ready for bed, in our pyjamas and he was not going to wait too long; so we merely rolled our pyjama legs up, donned our uniform skirts over the top, and we all went down to Plymouth Hoe. On the way down they took us for a drink but they served us with rum and we did not like it, so they finished it for us! We danced the night away with the matelots and with our pyjamas tucked up under our skirts.
Looking back, I think we must all have been a little bit crazy! But we were so relieved that it was all over.
