I remember nothing of the war but as a child I would listen enthralled by the tales told.
The Slough Trading Estate was a favourite target of German bombers but often there was low cloud. My mother was in the garden hanging out the washing, when she heard the low throb of an aeroplane engine. She looked up and through the gloom was horrified to see a large black cross on the wing of a German bomber. She rushed indoors, took me out of the pram and hid under the table, which didn't afford that much protection! The pilot failed to find his target so he dropped his bombs just a few hundred yards down the road, on an old people's home.
The blast blew the blackout curtains through the window frames so that they were flapping on the outside.
My uncle worked at High Duty Alloys, making bombs. During his shift he had to go to the foundry which entailed walking down a narrow corridor and turning left. As he walked away and back down the corridor there was an enormous explosion in the foundry. There were bodies and parts of bodies, scattered everywhere. Several men had fallen into the liquid metal. He missed death by seconds.Although it was claimed that the explosion was caused by a German bomb, he and many others never believed it and always felt that it was sabotage.
