1940 I had been to sunday school and was ready for my dinner. My mother asked me to go to the local pub to tell my father (who was home on leave) that dinner was ready. I poked my head round the bar door, dad said I'll be along in a minute. I walked back in the middle of the road, no cars or people, just me nine years old. I heard a noise, plane engines, I looked back over my shoulder, and there, just above the roof tops a german plane. The german and I stared at each other for what seemed a lifetime. I have always hoped he survived the war, I never spoke of this incident for years, but it is still as clear as if it was yesterdy
