i was evacuated in may 1940, under the government scheme. We all were pupils at Mcquiston School in Donegall pass. At lislane primary school local people choose which children could stay with them. My brother and i were most fortunate to be choosen by Mr Tom Oliver. Mr Oliver a widower lived with his daughter Jean. I was speaking to Jean last week in a Nursing home in Limavady. The Olivers lived in a traditional thatched farm house which had animal quarters ajoining the main building. The kitchen had a turf fire, a manual pump for fresh water and all cooking was done on the fire.
My brother and I enroled and attended Lislane Primary School. This was a shock to me as i had hoped to attended Belfast Technical High School.
