I well remember being evacuated. My brother and i assembled at our school with all the other children to be given our gas masks in a cardboard box. We were then then given a label which we put around our necks before boarding the train to take us to Waterloo station to be evacuated to Cornwall. We were billeted with a family who owned a farm in a place called Kelly Bray we were very happy and soon forgot that there was a war on that is until the germans bombed Devonport.Things were very quiet in London at this time so our parents decided to bring us home along with many other evacuees.
Having come back home and the Germans having destroyed Devonport they turned thier attention to London once again. ~Our parents once again evacuated us this time to our Grandmother in Nottingham. I was not very happy here as my Grandmother was very strict.
My brother and i had to come back to London after about a year as our Grandmother was very ill.
Our next experience of the war was of course the doodlebugs and the v2 rockets.
I had two very close encounters of these.
I was in New Cross when a doodlebug dropped on Woolworths.
The second was when a v2 rocket dropped on Hither Green cemetery at about 8oclock in the morning we were having breakfast at the time and we were all thrown to the floor. It took us days to clean up all the mud everywhere and the smell was horrible.
This was a very frightning time for me what with doodlebugs coming over all hours of the day and night then the v2 rockets which you could'nt hear coming.
