I was five when the war started and quite soon I was evacuated with my mother to Sussex on a farm. We were not there long as the farmer wanted the women to work on the farm and the children wre a nuisance. My mother was not happy and the final straw was when that night she had to sleep at the top of the house surrounded by boxes of apples around which ran mice.I do have a very faint recollection of this and so next morning having demanded her suitcase back as the farmers wife was somewhat reluctant to hand it over we were off to the station back home. My mother said she would rather face the bombs than a mouse any day!
