My brother Frank, who was 20 and serving with the Durham Light Infantry, came home one day with all his kit. All he knew, was that he was going overseas somewhere - but had no idea where.
The next thing, after a few weeks, we realised he had been serving in Dunkirk. My sister received a letter that was headed 'Thank God for the good old Navy!!'
He was very lucky to be alive. I remember my sister saying that his socks stood up on their own!
Frank never spoke much about Dunkirk, he lost a lot of good friends.
My father was a keen photographer and going back to 1938, he took a photograph of a cockle boat (the Renown) at Leigh-on-Sea, with it's crew visible. I still have the photo and after all these years, decided perhaps the Osbournes (still the owners of the cockle sheds) would like to have a copy. Unfortunately, the Renown was lost at Dunkirk. Mr Osbourne was able to recognise his uncle standing on the boat.
