In 1939 I lived in Eltham. On Saturday September 2nd I moved to Ditton near Maidstone in Kent, with my sister, as evacuees. Mum assumed we would be billeted togehter - hence only ONE suitcase lovingly packed by mum. The other children were llocated to new homes but the man turned to me at the end and said,
"Well, Harry, you're left - you had better come with me!"
During the whole time I was there I called the man and woman Mr and Mrs Toomey - I never knew their first names and I don't think they would have been happy with "aunt" and "uncle".
Mrs Toomey was the organist at the church and I manually pumped the organ for 3d a service.
Later I was in Sevenoaks during the Battle of Britain. I remember a school cricket match when the teacher/umpire sptooed a barage balloon had broken free and was drifting in the wind dragging its' mooring cable towards our field. Taken to safety on the boundary we watched in amazement as the cable dragged across our pitch. Slowly the balloon passed off, and we resumed our game.
Mum was in hospital for many weeks after a bomb hit our house in Eltham - when I next saw her six months later she had been fitted with an artificial glass eye.
