After brief period of rest and recreation, we were billeted in a large Victorian house on the front at Sea Salter a resort close to Whitsable.
The Company office was in large bedroom on the first floor.I was being given my orders for the day, when a huge formation of German bombers throbbed across the sky. Suddenly there was shrill whistle, the Sergeant Major shouted"down" and pulled me to the floor. as he did so the window shattered, shards of glass punctured our uniforms and a red hot piece of bomb casing buried itself into the wall where we had been standing. The Sergeant Major's swift reaction saved our lives and I forgave him for calling me "a orrible little man".
