I lived in Hackney, East London, near to the common and parks, where guns and searchlights were positioned.
I can remember that as soon as war was declared every household was required to black out all their windows so that no light could escape.
My father nailed up rugs, which were also intended to stop any flying glass should the windows be blown out.
After one huge raid the whole of the docks were ablaze, the flames were so intense they lit up the whole of the night sky.
I travelled into London everyday to work and at all times had to carry my tin hat and gas mask.
We tried to carry on as usual going to the pictures and dancing, always aware that the sirens might sound at any moment and we would have to take cover.
We were bombed out one night and had to live with friends until wew were re-housed.
Pretending to be older than I was, I joined the A.T.S in the pay corps and remained with them until the war was over.
I will always remember the saying "The darkest hour is before dawn" That was when we could expect the bombers.
