Story told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005
In 1941 one night mum told me we weren鈥檛 sleeping under the table, but in the gas cupboard. Well I just did as I was told. There was a heck of a noise that night as we sat there, then it stopped, and I thought that鈥檚 good it鈥檚 over. I didn鈥檛 know what it was then but now I know the silence was the doodlebugs, they used to cut out all the sound. Well there was such a mess a blast of everywhere all the plaster everywhere the doors off and the shelter where we would have been a real mess.
Well in the larder we鈥檇 got a goose and in the blast it鈥檇 flown through the house and landed near the doorway. My father who鈥檇 been fire watching must have thought we were dead. He came running in to find us. My mother came out of where we鈥檇 been hiding and played hell with him for treading goose fat all over the house!
