In 1940 or 1941 (I would have been 10 or 11) we had a young RAF pilot billeted on us. He was 'Mr Rafter' to us children - his mother was Lady Rafter. My only recollection of him is seeing him tearing down the stairs having been called for operational duties. My father, who was manager on No.1 pit, had taken him down the mine at one point and the poor boy hated it. He was killed on one of his sorties but his scarf hung in our cloakroom for the rest of the war - my mother not having the heart to dispose of it.
