My mother took me to visit her mother. Most of my mother's family had been in the Forces and mainly at sea and they had brought home various items, one of which was a pair of clogs. During the course of the afternoon, we had an air raid. What used to happen as far as I understand it, is the planes would come over and jettison their bombos over Cardiff. So the alarm went and we made to dash to the shelter in the garden but by that time I had stuffed my feet in my sandals into the clogs and locked them under a table which had crossbars and the more my mother pulled the more stuck I became! And by the time I eventually popped out the all clear was sounded, for which I got a jolly big hiding across my bottom.
