When the war started I was working at Bliss鈥檚 factory making naval shells. The shells were made from pieces of metal that looked like lumps of wood when they came in and they had to be turned to get the right shape and then bored out and the caps fitted. I worked on all sorts of machinery and at the end I was putting the copper bands round the bottoms of the shells. It was hot work.

One night we were all working when a warning bell rang. I had to crawl under all the conveyor belts to reach the air-raid shelter. When we came out it was a beautiful moonlit night and we saw the factory had been bombed, but within about 2 weeks it was all working again. I worked there for another 2 years.
