i remember one day sitting om my doorstep when a doodle bug flew straight up the streetand the rocket stoped , my mother grabbed me and ran in doors and we hid under a settee that was tilted ready to turn over the doodle bug exploded a few hundred yds away and all our upstairs windows blew in .
previouse to that .
my mother woked as cleaner in a pub called the cobham inn on frindsbury hilland at a place called broom hill they had barrage ballons maned by voluntary americans , one day a ballon broke free and ended up tamgled round the chimney of the cobham inn and a crew came down and had to cut it up and a peice was given to my mother to put on my bed as i was bedwetting at the time
another memory was close to the end of the war when my cousin and i where in north street and we saw parachutes coming down , we ran towrds the way they where headin but lost sight of them. later heard they had landed nr a roman catholic school and they where very youg and had been told that if they where captured we the enlish would eat them as we where very short of meat,
many years later i heard the same story from an ex german soldier who had been captured and sent over here to work on a farnm in wouldham , he never went back to germany and made a very nice life for himself here
