My mother came from Odessa and in 1939 her parents were concerned about her safety being the only daugher of the family. She was sent with a female friend by train to stay with relatives in London. She was only 17 at the time and did not speak any English.
Her parents were unfortunately killed by the Germans. It is thought that they were put in a synagogue which was then set alight.
Her elder brother and twin brother survived - in fact her twin brother remained in the family house until a few years ago. My mother married an English man, and worked in the munitions factory during the war.
My father was in the Long Range Desert force, which worked behind enemy lines.
