Food was short and was rationed. Each person was registered with a particular shop for supplies such as Bread, Butter, Margerine, Sugar and Meat. Sweets and Chocolate were luxuries and they were eventually rationed.
We also were issued with Clothing Coupons to limit the amount we could buy.
Petrol was also rationed and non-essential use of cars was severely restricted. Only a small number of people had a car in those days and cycles were used by many for transport.
A lot of imported fruit was not available at all. The shortages become even worse as the war progressed. After the USA became involved in the conflict there were many American soldiers, and Airforce personnel were stationed in the area.
We were then able to buy limited quantities of "Spam" which we enjoyed, perhaps rather more than Whale meat!
People were encouraged to keep chickens to provide eggs and also the occasional chicken, which was then a great treat.
Others kept pigs, but more space was needed to house them, and slaughtering was only permitted by licence from the Ministry of Food.
We experienced a large number of Air-raids, but many of the German planes flew on beyond us to bomb towns in the North-west. Birmingham and Coventry were heavily bombed and the fires they caused would light up the sky.
