In 1940 I joined the A TS at the age of 18 mixing alongside sargeants, nco's, privates and them on guns, I also served in the mess (tea room) I was in A TS until age 21 then I got into trouble and got chucked out. I then settled down and got married age 23 and went on to have 7 children.
It was quite nice learning the guns based at Ilkley Moor.
I went to the Sergants mess preparing meals. We liked it, we liked the uniforms. Me and my friend signed up together on London Road. We went to Pontefract to do our training. We had drills and learnt the guns - square bashing we called it.
After 5pm we'd finish and could go to the cinema and things, could mix with the lads.
I'd come on leave, so would my boyfriend, then we got married.
We had to all the family save up our rations for the wedding, I made my own vail and had a plain dress. We went home for the wedding, in Basford, Nottingham. It was a good day.
