DAD鈥橲 WAR
Dad went in the Army in 1942. He was sent up to Derby to do his training for the R.A.O.C and to get a good set of teeth. We had not seen him for a few weeks but by the time he came back he had all his teeth out, and had a beautiful set of dentures made for him. The transformation was so great my younger sister told everyone she had two daddies, one on a bike and one in the Army. You can see how rumours begin. He looked really good and almost happy (It was when he was in his nineties that he admitted how much he had liked the Army because it was the only time in his life he did not have any responsibilities). Dad鈥檚 teeth lasted till he was ninety or thereabouts and he wouldn鈥檛 part with them.
Later in the War, Dad was attached to a Canadian Unit in the south who went over on the Normandy Landings. Dad always said he didn鈥檛 go over with them but he was very emotional when he talked about that particular time in his life. Time must have rolled back twenty five years for Dad as he saw the Canadians going over to Normandy, remembering his own Father coming back from France in 1918 shell shocked and very ill. Before the men went they had to get rid of all their personal property, so Dad came home with big bars of chocolate and a pair of ice skates.
