I went into the army in 1942, into the Royal Army Pay Corps. I was stationed at Foots Cray in the Old Kolster Brand building dealing with accounts for army personnel.

A notice went up on the board saying that during a raid male and female civil servants, ATS and military should take cover under the tables.

After about a week another notice went up saying that male civil servants and military ONLY should take cover under tables. ATS and female civil servants were to file outside to the shelters!

This story was submitted to the People's War website by Helena Noifeld and Sally Woolley and has been added to the website on behalf of Eric Judges. He fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
