This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Mike Sharman of the CSV 大象传媒 Coventry and Warwickshire Action Desk on behalf of Geaorge Gibbs and has been added to the site with his/her permission. The author fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions, Three little pigs
It was during the invasion of Italy that our Section acquired three piglets: we loaded them onto one of our army vehicles as it seemed a good idea to take them along to ensure a really good Christmas dinner for all the unit.
These pigs were fed at the Cookhouse each day; they knew where they were well off so never wandered too far, they seemed to know the difference between advance and retreat, as they were always easier to catch at times when we needed to move backwards.
Came Christmas and time to transform these pigs into a good Christmas feast as now they had grown well and were quite fat.
Trouble was, they had also become quite friendly through the weeks leading up to Christmas and were now more like pets. This gave us quite a dilemma as no-one was prepared to 鈥減ut them to sleep鈥, not even the cooks. So the only alternative, after much debate was to give them their freedom in the countryside around Naples. Hopefully their offspring are still roaming around some part of the Italian countryside.
