We had to get a special license to get married quickly because my husband to be was being posted abroad in Singapore. We got married on the Tuesday and he sailed for Singapore on the Thursday.

It was all done in such a rush. My father made the cake and we had the reception in our front room. I remember I wore a pale turquoise dress and jacket and a pill box hat with a tiny veil. I carried a huge bunch of white lilies.

Of course we never have time for a honeymoon but we didn't have to wait long.

On the way out to Singapore the Atom bomb was dropped and the war was over. He came back home six months later.
