After bombing in Heaton, the dance hall was being cleared. The bombs fell near the railway line, hitting nearby houses, killing people. Their remains are buried in Heaton cemetary, some unknown. A black marble headstone states -Air raid Victims, known only to God.- For weeks after the attack clothing was hanging from the tree branches ! Now there are flats for the elderly built there.
When the radio gave out that the war had finally ended, no instructions were given to the public about the opening and closing of the shops.
