My grandfather on my wife鈥檚 side was a navy personnel of Normandy beaches in 1940 evacuating personnel off the beaches. The ship (HMS Keith) was sunk he went into the water and he was always told to not follow the crowd so he swam the opposite way to the rest of the crew that were in the water swimming towards a large barge which sank also. He was picked up by a small fishing boat and landed in Margate.
