We had an Anderson Shelter in our back garden, it was dug out of the earth, the roof was aluminium and the earth that had been dug out was piled on top.
At first we went down to the shelter every time we heard a siren but after a while we stayed in bed.
I had to do firewatching duty, reporting fires and putting them out with a stirrup pump. I was on duty all night despite having to go to work the next day. No matter what the conditions were I set out for work every day. Sometimes the journey to work could take hours on the train, even after the bltz had ended and evn if no siren had sounded. We just sat the time out on the train.
