During the war we had a lot of evacuees passing through. they used to stop to break their journey to wherever they were being evacuated to. They would stay in our church hall in Hamil Road, Burslem for one night.
The church needed people to spend the night with the evacuees so my sister and I volunteered.
The evacuees were all women and children. Social Services set up big trestle tables loaded with bread, margarine and spam and they brought along bedding for the folks to use.
My sister and I would spend the night with them and then go home and get ready for work.
I remember leaving the church during the blackout one day and walking in to someone. I apologised profusely but it turned out to be a tree!
